Possible Career Pathways

Having a possible job to aim for though out your progress can be very beneficial to when you finish your education and entire the job market, here I’ll be looking at the main job’s I am interested in as well as some other jobs which are also an opinion. In the future my ideal career would be a in permanent job working at a studio in the art department as a concept artists rather than a freelancer as I prefer the security and environment of a permanent placement over freelance which is certainly something to conserved when looking into what jobs to consider.

The first job and my current aim is a Concept Artists, a Concept Artist generally works for a studio or as a freelance artists in the industry of film and TV. Their job is to realise the Production Designer and Art Directors visions and provide visuals for production at its base, they begin work at the very beginning of a production working of scripts or a book if the production is based of pre-existing material. They also do large amounts of research into whatever it is they are creating in their path to develop and design ideas and are often used though out production as often changes are made which need to be re-realised (creativeskillset.org 2017). Personally I like the description of this job, it includes creating art work as well as design to a realistic standard which fits my current skills very well, I also like how you’ll be working of scripts and books and be at the base of a productions art direction. What however does dissatisfies me is the research side of it, but I do think you would be researching things of interest to me since I’m a very inquisitive person who finds a lot of things interesting whether that’s historical or inspirational research making it not that big of an issue. This is still definitely one of my top choices.

My second job choice is Prop Maker; a Prop Maker generally works for a studio or as a freelance maker in Film and TV as well as Theatre. Their job is to arrange, design, and make the props for a production usually working of concept artist’s work or the production designs vision to design and create, or buy, props for a production. In the job skills of drawing and draftsman ship as well as 3D skills such as calving, sculpture and casting are used to create the props (creativeskillset.org 2017). What I like about this job is its hands on approach with sculpture and making to create realistic but fake items for said production, I also love how they have the biggest part in designing the props and solving problems which might occur. What however puts me of it is the lack of 2D art used as there may be drafts making and designing but the majority of that would be not individual pieces of artwork but rather just designs, this is why this isn’t my top choice for the jobs list despite my interest in it.

My final job is Art Director; an Art Director is usually hired for a production to oversee the art department and help realise the Production Designers vision. Their job is to organise  the whole department while also proving  the visual guidance to the department, they are often most responsible for the look and visuals of a film since e they often direct the concept artist and the prop makers. They are also often in charge of organisation, time management, and budget across the department as well as being present on the set of production (nationalcareersservise.direct.gov.uk 2017). This is probably my least favourite job choice as I do love the idea of leading the art direction of a project and being in control of visuals in such a way, but the idea of the management of time, money, and resources does concern me as they are some of my weakest points as a person which could mean I would make for a terrible organiser. There is also little opportunity for creating artwork, since it’s a part of the job but not a major part and normally just more of a side note making it not to appealing to me personally but I still think it was worth a mention.

There are still many jobs which could apply to me, both in and out of the film and TV industry by the use of my skill set, some of my favourite are as follows-
-Production Designer
-Set Designer
-Set Maker
-Photographer/Production Photographer
-Illustrator
-Editorial Illustrator
-Story Boarder
-Prop Master

Overall I still think Concept Artists is at the moment the right career path for me as it encompasses my current skills and knowledge which I can grow on and the direction I am going as well as with my work. I also think its fulfilling in where I want to take my career by filling my desire to work in the Film and TV industry art departments. This creates a direction for my work to go in and a new set of things I will need to work on if this is the direction I want to head in.
