Looking at practitioners is a great way of getting
inspiration for future projects as well as giving an idea of where to head with
both your career and art work. Ideally in my future I would like to work in a
combination of digital art and traditional as well as in a permanent job rather
than freelance work. The artists I have chosen reflect this direction I would
like to head and aspire to in the possible future, both in their work and/or in
their careers.
'Hunting' by Rosemary Chalmes
The first artist I am looking at is Rosemary Chalmes, she is a freelance concept artists and lecturer based in the England who specialises in creature creation and design. Her work is a combination of traditional methods such as pencil, ink, and watercolour combined with digital art to create many of her pieces, some of them even being pure traditional, others being pure digital. The subject of her work is all creature creation based, in these design she takes heavy inspiration from nature often combining parts of different animals to create the final beast which would often be painted out in pastels and light colours to give the suggestion of colour with bight lighting in her work (rosemaryartist.com 2017). What inspire me about her is her work and the way she combined technics to create her work, often using pencil to draw them out then adding colour with digital or with watercolours. I also love how she uses pastel colours which give a realistic and clean looking image with the light coming through from the work giving it a certain beauty. The only thing about this practitioner which puts me off is that she is a freelance artist which is something I want to avoid as freedom of choice on projects doesn’t really appeal to me as much as having a permanent job working for a studio but for her its more her artwork and techniques which I would rather be like then her career position proving her to still be a great influence and someone I would like to aspire to.
Scorn Concept Art by Filip Acovic
The second artist I am looking at is Fillip Acovic, he is an American concept artist who generally creates artwork for various productions. His work is a pure use of digital painting to create landscapes and scenery design for computer games and film, in this work he often uses low colour pallets and heavy use of texture and lighting to give them atmosphere and presence which can then be interpreted for the production (conceptart.org 2017). What inspires me about his work is the way he uses this light with the textures and limited colour to create incredibly atmospheric piece of art which I absolutely love and find incredible inspiring on an artistic stand point. I also love his use of composition in the work and his designs for the architecture having a biomechanical aesthetic. It is this that I would like to aspire to in being able to create work that has such atmosphere to it which would then translate into the production it was made for.
My final artists is Christian Pearce, he is a Senior Concept
Artist for Weta Studios based in New Zealand and has worked on multiple big
budget films. His proses is mostly digital with the occasional acrylic, oil, or
pencil sketch in his work, he has worked on many different subjects, from
creature creation to landscapes and worlds all the way to dragons and
spaceships; he has a wide variety of subjects in his work (artstation.com
2017). Personally I do love his work and his style as well as his occasional
use of traditional methods but what makes him so inspirational to me is his career
as a Senior Concept Artist at Weta Studios, meaning his job is very permanent and
long term but also varying and exciting, plus the whole studio is based in New
Zealand which is one of the most beautiful countries in the world making his career
and his work two future possibilities that I would like to aspire to.
In conclusion after looking at these artists it is clear
that I would prefer a permanent placement job similar to that of Pearce while
also combining traditional technics like he did with his work. I would also
like to aspire to make such atmospheric work as Acovic with his inspired design
style. Finally is Chalmes whose combination work is extremely inspirational and
something which gives me great ambition to archive in the combination of both digital
and traditional or as in some of her works just one of the methods. Overall
though looking at these artists has made it clearer to me where I want to take
my work in the future and has given me an idea of some of the jobs I want to
possibly work.
