In current practice I am working mainly in pencils, finer liner,
and biro which I have been practicing for 3-4 years with the rare acrylic or ink
painting; I have also occasionally work with charcoal and chalk. Over those years
I have also worked heavily in photography, starting 6 years ago with digital
but in recent months I have started learning film photography and enjoying it
so much that I have started shifting my main practice over to film. Subject wise
I have generally focused on portraiture with occasional landscapes and wildlife
to both draw from and photograph often with messages and meanings drawn from
the world and my personal life.
Recently in the past few weeks I have begun using watercolours
and would love to learn more on them and improve myself with them to a much
higher degree. In the future projects I would like to combined watercolour and
my already known use of pencil, fine liner, and biro to create my works and
begin to fully understand them and how they work together. I would also like to
improve my use of line, since in my work I find my textures and tone are always
strong but my line always lacking a bit, this is something I would live to
improve and change in the future of my work. Also in the foreseeable future I
would also like to begin learning digital art after I get to understand watercolour
first and would like to combine traditional practices with digital similarly to
one of my chosen practitioners. I am also going to cut photography out as the
main feature of my future projects and instead focus on more illustration based
work. However I will not end my use of photography and I would like to still practice
film photography as I think it’s incredibly benedictional, not only in helping
capture subjects to draw from but also to help learn framing, composition, and
light which then can be applied in the illustrations; it is also a great source
of inspiration. Subject wise I am going to start focusing more on concept
projects, mainly visualising anything from creature creation to landscapes to
help develop my design skills as well as working to create semi-realistic to
realistic looking images to help develop my drawing and painting skills. Furthermore
the work I will be producing will be not only to developed skills but also to
help make a portfolio in the future for when I apply for the next stage in my
education.
For the project proposal I have set out a few ideas which
will fulfil where I want to go to choose from for the project. My first one,
and my favourite, is ‘The Bloop’ which works of a sound recorded in the 1990’s
called the Bloop and visualising what might have made such a noise and then
putting this creation into a piece of artwork, this will be accompanied by a
lot of development and research to get to the final piece. The project will be
done using a range of traditional techniques of watercolour, fine liners, biro,
pencil, charcoal, and ink to help develop my drawing skills and my use of watercolour.
My second proposal would be looking into landscapes, both urban and natural,
and looking into lighting and textures used to create piece of work with them
in to help developed my drawing skills and broaden my subject use. It would be
done in water colours and traditional drawing methods to help develop those
skills similarly to the last one. My final possible project is called ‘Skin’
and it would be a project that would aim to create a final piece of portraiture
which would have been developed from studies and smaller pieces, the piece
would be looking at skin problems, many inspired by some of my own skin issues.
The project would be done using water colours and traditional drawing methods similar
to the last to as to help me develop those skills, however it is unlikely to
get picked since it doesn’t push my design and visualisation skills which I will
need for the future.
